Today we met for the first time
as our friends danced and partied,
Yet in the corner alone you stayed
with a look of deep sadness in your eyes.
For such a long time I waited
trying to get my courage up,
Finally I walk up to you
and try to get you to talk.
The sadness written on your face
almost brought me to my knees,
Deep inside I felt my heart melt
and make me want to see you smile.
Slowly I sat in the chair next to you
and talked about a variety of things,
Letting you feel that you can relax
and that I am not asking for anything.
Long minutes passed, then an hour
before I first heard your voice,
Whatever calm I had, shattered
with your very first word.
The agony in your voice told me volumes
about the pain you held inside,
Making me want to fight the world off
simply to protect you.
As the party went on around us
we were lost in our conversation,
Slowly getting to what was bothering you
and causing your sadness.
Little by little as the time passed by
I saw light coming back to your face,
The beauty of your smile
matched the glorious sound of your laugh.
All around us the party came to a stop
as people stopped and turned to stare,
Amazed to hear you laughing
especially at the corny joke I told.
My heart went into overtime
as your smile and laughter spread,
Joy filling me head to toe
as I caused your first smile.
