Our Hero
Nervous energy, clammy hands
Heel tapping repeatedly on the concourse floor.
He runs his hands over his freshly shaved head
And throws his green duffle bag over his back.

He walks with purpose toward the boarding plane.
Taking in the faces of the people he protects.
Passing mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers.
As he heads off to serve his country with honor.

And just before he approaches the door,
An elderly man rises slowly, removing his tattered Marines hat,
His cane put aside as he stands at attention and salutes.
And the soldier stops to take a breath and compose himself.

Then the gratitude swells through the other travelers,
One clap, then many and the soldier looks down and smiles.
He sets down his bag and returns the respect to the veteran,
A crisp salute and a handshake, a whispered “God Bless” to the young man.

Rousing cheers from all as he continues toward his plane,
Expressing their gratitude for his selflessness and courage.
He is one of many, yet one of a kind.
Thank you, our hero, for protecting us all.
